Condition assessment is the most important step for beginning window restoration. It will help you determine whether a window is restorable or beyond repair. Detailed surveying of each window is conducted to investigate jamb and sash component integrity, paint finishes, sealants, glass condition, and glazing.
Condition assessments are sometimes required by local landmark and preservation districts before restoration of historic structures may proceed. Many times, these districts request supporting documentation (condition assessments) for explanation of restoration or renovation plans. A Certificate of Appropriateness, along with other permits, is required before starting any renovation work within one of these areas.
